School Motivation: Children all have, at one time or another, a phase of demotivation at school. Here are some tips and advice for parents to promote their children’s academic motivation!

The difficult times during the school curriculum is a step by which many of us parents have moved. And of course, our children are no exception to the rule. But like any good parent, we wish the best for our future doctors, lawyers, scientists, businessmen and so on.

However, being a good parent also means knowing how to manage their demotivation or better yet, prevent it and protect them from it. Not all children get the chance to work with a private tutor in tutoring sessions. So today we put at your disposal, 5 tips for academic motivation that will help in this direction.

Tell your children about your own school experience

It is the first step when your children are in a phase of school demotivation. But it is also in the process of prevention of this same phase. Also, be sure to only mention positive experiences, those that have led you to your current status in order to give them school motivation.

Tell them how your teacher made you become passionate about reading, or how your teacher made you develop a taste for history & geography and you got to know about the unification of Italy. There are so many examples, that your children are sure to be amazed.

But the most important thing is to talk to them positively about school, to alleviate their stress and to arouse or stir up school motivation in them.

Because if you ever tell them that you don’t like school, they’ll do the same because they’re at an age where parents are role models for them. So it is much better to approach the difficulties they encounter with positivity by proposing solutions than to accept that they are in a bad phase and that it will just work out on its own. This leads us directly to the second tip.

Take an interest in every lesson they receive at school

Only by doing so can you easily find the solution to their difficulties, so that they regain academic motivation or do not lose it. You must indeed monitor the lessons that have been taught to them day after day.

But also, you should ask them what they learned and liked about these lessons. This simple after-class conversation will let you know if your child is attending school. But more importantly, he will realize that following a lesson well makes you proud. It doesn’t take more than 15 minutes, so why not do it!

Get your kids used to a homework routine

The homework routine is a point that should not be neglected, and this is from the first school year. It is essential to get your children used to it to ensure their success.

And of course, this is an important aspect for academic motivation. Especially since getting them used to it, it will remain a routine throughout their schooling. So help them review their lessons before they do their homework, and they’ll give it their all when they see your interest in their success.

Make a point of honor on learning

Valuing learning can sometimes make lessons more fun, and therefore easier for your children to understand. This is the reason why any opportunity to learn is good for academic motivation. Most importantly, you can value learning almost anywhere. You just have to be creative.

For example, you can get your children used to quick math when you go shopping together, play educational board games with them, go to the library together, visit museums, or even have fun asking them questions about the lessons you have reviewed. There are so many options to enhance learning, so you are sure to find your faves.

Avoid them being subject to any form of frustration

Motivation is the greatest asset your children have, but also the most delicate. Indeed, a simple word coming from you can lead them to demotivation. You don’t remind them of their failures and difficulties because they already know them. Also, doing it is likely to affect their self-esteem, which could become very problematic.

In addition, there is this habit that we have as parents, to compare children to a brother, a sister, or to comrades who do better at school. This is another bad practice because each child has a unique learning pace.

It is, therefore, wiser to encourage them constantly, in order to continually boost their motivation. Be sure to congratulate your children when they come back with good grades. They love that their parents are proud of them, and will always make an effort in this direction, so reward those efforts.

In conclusion

You can follow the school motivation process in that order, or you can create an order according to your convenience. Either way, the goal will still be achieved if you put each of these tips into practice. And if despite these efforts your children are still not motivated, it’s time to meet their teachers to find out if they are having problems at school. But don’t wait for it to happen either, do it as a preventive measure.
